Corel Draw File Conversion

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can open Corel Draw files *.CDR?

Alan

No, there really isn't one. CDR is a propietary format.
But, here's a suggestion...
If the file can be converted (say by the original user) to a Jpeg or BMP,
etc., ask them to do that before sending it to you.
Alternatively, you can download a free trial (I know, that's OT here) of
Draw from corel.com (big download) and use it to convert it yourself and do
a few other things with the program before the time expires. Or, if you know
someone with Draw, you can email the file and ask them to convert it and
send it back as a Jpeg if all you want to do is view the file as it will be
one object.

shure: google for a small (only about 250KB) program named ROMCAT

As far as I know, ROMCAT only displays the preview thumbnail which may
be included in *.cdr-files. Nothing too special and I don't think it
the kind of program Alan would expect if he wants to 'open Corel Draw
files'.

shure: google for a small (only about 250KB) program named ROMCAT or,
for your comfort, try
"https://www.unleash.com/articles/romcat/romcatdownload.asp". This
program should doe what you asked for.

RomCAT can *not* open Corel Draw files - it's an *add-on* for Corel Draw.

Select the drive letter of your CD ROM drive in the tree list at the top
of the dialog box. If you choose the drive letter, all folders on that
drive will be included in the catalog. ROMCat will begin to build a new
catalog which could take a half hour or so on slower machines (and/or
slow CD-ROM drives). After the new catalog has been generated, you are
asked to name it.

The next time you run ROMCat, select File | Open Catalog. Choose the
name of the catalog you generated earlier. Now type a keyword in the
Find text box. After typing in a keyword, a list of matching files will
automatically appear at the right of the screen as shown below. Click on
a file name to see a thumbnail preview of the file (this requires the
clipart CD in your CD-ROM drive). When you find the file you want to
use, double click on its file name. If you already have a file open in
CorelDRAW, the clipart will be imported into that file. If CorelDRAW is
not open, ROMCat will open CorelDRAW displaying your selected clipart.

Crippled version of main program, viewing certain files is limited to very
old applications..i.e. CorelDraw V8.
While it will open cdr's up to version 8, you can't do anything with them.
license required...
Your licence number will be emailed to the address that you provide. Please
be sure to enter it correctly.
Requires First Name, Last Name, Email Address and Company.

If it requires that you fill in anything just to get a license to view old
files, etc., it ain't freeware. It's called Registerware or some such.

The OP could always hop over to the newsgroup
corel.graphic_apps.cdgs11-draw and ask there.
Very knowledgeable group of users when it comes to Draw.

Conclusion: there ain't no freeware that will open cdr's, it's a propietary
format.

I faced this issue a while back when I was looking for a photo organizer
program to handle Corel files.

It appears that Corel is REAL selective (Think $$$$) as to who can have the
rights to their file format and as a result, nobody seems to be willing to
handle Corel files, not even ACDSee who SELLS PhotoPaint! The ONLY organizer
I have found that handles Corel is Canto Cumulus (again, think $$$, and
Canto Cumulus is - well - a little outdated in my eyes)

Seems like a very shortsighted approach for a company that is a distant
second to Adobe and survives on handouts from Microsoft. You'd think they'd
do everything the could to encourage third party support.

Thanks for the information. I'll try to get the sender to convert to another
format and resend me the files.
