I've got a Sapphire Non Pro 9500 that I've done the eight pipeline hardware
mod to and it works perfectly.
however I've started having overheating problems and decided to replace the
heatsink with an iceberq4.
Upon further investigation I discovered I can see daylight between a
straight edge held across the shim and the core(not good). The question is
does anyone know the easiest and safest way to remove the shim without
destroying the core. Thanks in advance.

That is normal. The gap is for the thermal tape thickness used with stock
heatsink. I filled it with thermal paste compound. A square piece of copper
foil would fill this gap nicely. The shim protects the GPU core from
excessive force. I have read that is glued on circuit board and can be pried
off although I would be very cautious about doing so.

Does the pipeline mod work on the 9600XT? Could someone give me a URL about
it? Even if it's just for the reading, I'd appreciate it
