By law, anything created such as a photo, song, etc. is automatically
copyrighted the instant you create it and you own the copyright. However, to
enforce it, should the need arises, you should register the item.
Photographers usually do not register a single photo. Rather, they register
a portfolio containing as many photos as they want so as to reduce the cost
of registration.

I'm thinking that any image uploaded to a
website can be copied. There are ways to
prevent...right click / save as...but the files
can still be retrieved from the viewer's
Temporary Internet Files folder and if
nothing else...a screenshot will copy the
image.
The best deterrent IMHO is to add a
copyright notice to each image. Not so
much to enforce your rights but to simply
make the image useless to anyone who
would copy it unless they were willing to
do extensive editing to remove the notice.
