Copying partitions on SATA drives

Since switching away from an MSI (non-sata) raid array, I have been unable
to copy a performance raid array partition to another hard drive. Drive
Image freezes up after 10 minutes, and Ghost scared me to death!

Without a backed up partition, I tried launching ghost from XP, and like a
dope, allowed it to create its virtual partition. Naturally, it never got
past "Verifying DMI..." The partition was inactivated, and I had to go
through a complex and terrifying procedure to reactivate it.

The Ghost dos version responded just like Drive Image.

Is Serial ATA not compatible with partition imaging software?

I didn't ask for an ad. Of the 3 apps in question, your suggestion is by
far the least known and used. This would make the obvious question, "why
Acronis?"

By only posting a link to a purchase page, your post is effectively spam.
It also lowers the traffic I'll get as my question now looks answered.

Acronis True Image works IN windows, it does NOT drop down to dos to
backup the data, like ghost or Drive image does. (Although I think the
new version of Drive image also runs in windows?) It DOES drop down
to dos on restore, but that makes sense.

For your problem, dunno, try asking the people who made the software.
I know ghost don't like some controller cards, so that may be a issue.

Drive Image 7 does run IN Windows but ONLY IN Windows 2000 or XP.
DI7 and Acronis True Image 6 drop to DOS on restore when restoring the
OS partition

I don't have a SATA setup, but I would think that if DI did not work
with SATA controllers, we would have heard about it long before now.
Sorry I don't have a specific answer to the original question.

Put your drives back in the MSI board, and take your image.
Transfer everything to the A7N8X and restore your image.
RAID arrays are not usually compatible between different controllers.

You need to boot from the Ghost/Drive Image floppy discs.

Works just fine, with the DriveImage/Ghost bootable floppies/

Here was PowerQuest's reply:

Nick - The functionality of the Serial ATA controller was not tested by
PowerQuest at the time of the release of DriveImage 7 or with earlier
versions and therefore, it is not known if problems exist with usage as
there have been conflicting reports.

My understanding is that no product can copy a partition in windows under
ntfs. I know for a fact that Ghost creates a virtual partition from windows
and reboots to dos. Of course, the likelihood of failure is high.

Drive Image can also create a session from windows but it also needs to boot
to dos for it to run.

When mb was switched, drives were reformatted and a new array was created.
I first tried floppy disc applications for DI and Ghost, each with the same
result. Lockup after 10 or so minutes. These sata drives are used to form
a striped raid array. See my post below with PowerQuests response.

Using True Image, I have copied NTFS partitions just fine. It even
can handle boot partition, and the active registry and all that good
stuff. Not 100% sure how it does this, but I assume it has something
to do with the device driver it installs, but maybe their web site has
more info.
