My boss bought a new computer without copying anything from the old one. All
our customer's database is located on the old one (which used Windows XP) in
an old version of quickbooks. .The problem is that the girl who used to do
our data entry, did just that. I couldn't do a transfer of files, programs,
etc. from old to new because the old one got torn apart, ruined, whatever.
So my thought was to take out the harddrive and I took it to Staples and let
the very smart young computer savy guy copy our data which luckily was still
good. (For a cheap price too!) So, I take the cd back to the brand new shiny
pretty computer, and assume I won't have anymore problems loading it into the
new quickbooks (2008) with the brand new shiny pretty green box. I have
Windows XP at home, and I don't know Vista and can't for the life of me (my
life could be in trouble-I told her I think I know what I'm doing) figure out
how to copy those and put them into the new quickbooks. Please help me
someone and it will be so greatly appreciate! Thank-you, Georgene

Sorry... this is just from memory....

You really don't have to move (copy) these files by hand... in fact, you can't.
QB Security features actually prevent this. It *must* be done through the
'back-up' and 'import' process that is located within QuickBooks software.

You probably need a QuickBooks manual in front of you, and perhaps should
see if there is a QB users group you could chat with. If your software is new
and you have a subscription for support, someone in India will be glad to
walk you through this. ;-) You will need an XP PC to create the backup
if I'm not sadly mistaken.

If I recall correctly, you will have to attach the drive to a PC with XP and the
current version of QB installed. Then you will need to do a QB automated
(or manual) version of a complete back-up of the Company profile. It is the
"Company profile" backup that must be imported into the version of QB on
your new VISTA PC. The "data" is all within the Company 'back-up' package
file, and the version of QB on the new PC should be able to read and import
this file and all of the data, and place it properly in QB.

Perhaps more positive help will be forthcoming...

Actually... grab the QB manual and find out the file extension name for
the QB Company Backup file. If you had a good accountant or data entry
person, the company profile was probably backed up daily... either to a file
(the one you're searching for) in QB or My Documents, or, to another drive
or a CD.
