I don't know what I did but now whenever I drag and drop a file from one
folder to another, the computer will copy the file to the new folder and
erase the file in the original folder.

This did not happen before. Before when ever I copied a file using drag and
drop the computer would copy the file to the new folder and leave a copy of
the file in the original folder.

Can anyone show me how to undo whatever it is I did that caused this?

Thanks,

Jerman

p.s. I am running windows XP for home with SP2 update.

There are certain rules for dragging and dropping. These rules have been
the same since dragging/dropping appeared within Windows.

If dragging to another folder *and* to another drive (or a different
partition on the same drive), the file will be copied. If you hold the
Shift key down during this process, you can force a move.

If dragging to another folder on the same drive, the file will be moved. If
you prefer a copy to be made, hold the CTRL key while dragging and
dropping.

Instead of remembering what key to press and when, try dragging and
dropping using the secondary mouse button (usually the right button)
instead. When you drop the object you were dragging, you'll get a menu
prompting for a decision: copy, move or create a shortcut. This method
involves one extra click but it's easier to remember and it is nice
protection against unwanted results when a slip of the finger on the mouse
or the keyboard occurs.

hmmmm....uh...... me in fact.... mostly cause I really did not know the
rules when I got my 1st computer system and so had figured things out by
trial and error.... and in fact I taught myself everything about using my
computer and all software products that way, can be more fun than reading
directions...
(and now do teaching and tech for others with computers)
.......soooo....
*oh yah, I do know I am not dumb, my IQ tests at 145* :P
<sigh> and yes, I do drag and drop with the right -as well as the left-
mouse button....
as I am sure many other users out there do...
So come on now ... fess up all you 'left draggers! '

That is just one of several reasons why (sp) 'there' is a left button! <g>

If I drag your fire engine to my station yours would be gone and I would
have it, right? But if I made a copy of your engine and put it in my station
we would both have one. So, do not drag and drop, instead use Copy & Paste.
