copying files to a CD

I am trying to copy some files to a CD, and the error message comes up
that I need to insert a new CD (which I had done) and it will not copy.
I have spent hours trying to find directons on how to do this. When I
play an audio CD, it will work. My only other thought is perhaps a new
CD can be "old"? I'm really a novice on repairing the PC. Also, I have
defragged, done 5 different scans, deleted cookies and files and that
didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions? Smiley Gilrl

Get ahold of a package like Nero or Roxio. The native Windows
support for CD/DVD burning is very limited. If you don't do that, you
could try compressing your files, but that could be a hassle for you.
If your drive will burn DVDs, you could put the data on a DVD; they hold
about 7 times as much data as a DVD. The price of Nero and Roxio are
well worth it. You can buy a version that's one less than the current
one (e.g. Roxio 9 while Roxio 10 is out) on Amazon.com for around $20,
well worth the cost. I just bought Roxio 9 that way for $15 plus $3.75
shipping, and it works well with both XP and Vista.

Why not Google for free burners ? - plenty out there .

Thanks for your replys! I have already tried using the DVD. It seems
like it is a problem with the hard ware. What do the Roxio or Nero
actually do? I have download and used the Uniblue Registry Booster.
The problems seemed to start when I download the IE7. I did go to the
site and download the fixes, but it didn't seem to make a difference in
how the PC was working. And, now I habe the copying problem.

| Nothing wrong with downloading a free burner IF you know what you're
| doing. My preference is a "store bought" program because I'm sure I
| know what I'm getting, I'm 98% sure I won't pick up malware, and I know
| what kind of support I can expect. This is especially true when I'm
| giving advice to an acknowledged novice.

What everyone is failing to comment on is:
Does She have a CD-RW drive?
If so, is the RW part of the drive working.
It sound like the drive does not recognize a blank CD.
Having a paid, or free, burner software will do nothing if the drive is not a RW drive or is
defective.

I have been able to copy before, and I tried copying a different file
and it would still not copy. How do I check to see if I have the the
cd-wr drive? This has all happened since the IE7 installation. Thanks
to all of you.

If you have been able to copy to CDs with this drive before, then it is a CD-RW or a DVD-RW drive.
If you hold the "logo" key (the one with the MS flag on it) and press the "Pause/Break" key you will
get the "Systems Window"
click on the "hardware" tab, then the "device manager" button. You will see a list of your
hardware. Click the + sign in front of CD drives and you will see the make and model of your CD
drive(s). This will confirm if it is a CD burner drive, or at least if Windows recognizes it as a
burner drive.

Unfortunately, CD and DVD burner drives use to different "laser-mirror" subsystems to read a disk
and to burn a disk. One of these subsystems could be out-of-alignment or burned out. In that case,
a new DVD-RW* drive would be required. You should be able to get one for under $40 and they are
easy to install and should not require any setup. (*CD-RW drives are generally not available in
stores)

Hi Richard,
Here is the number I got after following all your directions.
NEC DVD+-RWND-6500A I don't know what that means, so I appreciate
your help.

Smiley Girl

It means you have a NEC brand DVD burner that did accept either -R or +R disks.
The model number is ND-6500A.
If you can't get it to burn a CD then I suspect your need a new drive.

Hi,

I decided to go to Best Buy down the street and see if I could quickly
get a new drive for my laptop. I was told that would be hard to find
for a laptop and since I hardly used the drive it went out pretty fast.
Should I contact Dell? Any other suggestions? Smiley Girl
