Copying files & folders

I have 2 computers that are not networked. One is a tower
and has Windows ME. The other is a laptop and has Windows
XP. I am going crazy. I am simply trying to copy selected
folders & files from the tower to the laptop using my
tower RW backup CD. The laptop can not see the folders
created by the tower. I tried creating folders on the CD
RW with the laptop so as to copy certain files into them
from the tower and the tower tells me access is denied to
the folders. There is some annoying security feature in
Windows XP that is keeping me from easily transferring
files and folders between the 2 computers. I have never
encountered this problem with previous Windows opeating
systems. I hope it is something simple because I don't
want to add networking to my lengthy to do list at this
stage. Can anyone help?

With the ME you are probably using some packet writing software like
Direct CD or InCD. XP can read *some* of these, but the implementations
were not really consistent, and it can't read them all. Better to use a
mastering program like Nero or Easy CD Creator, making an ISO/Joliet
'session' on a blank CD-RW. This is a standard format which the laptop
will read. And you can add sessions until the disk fills, then erase it
for reuse

I am in fact using Adaptec's Direct CD to format the RW
CD that I use to back up my Word, Excel and Access files
created on my custom HP tower with the Windows ME
operating system. I just bought a Vaio laptop for
internet connections and offsite work. I am coming up the
learning curve on XP. I organize the various files on my
tower backup RW CD into folders. There are a few
individual files on the RW CD but the vast majority of
the files are in folders. I could not understand why XP
could not see folders but could see the individual files
not contained in folders. Also, I could not understand
why the Windows ME tower would not allow me to access any
folders created on a RW CD by the XP laptop [I tried
formating a RW CD on the laptop for use in the trasnsfer
process between the computers but that did not work
either]. I did not realize there was such a difference
between CD burner software ... Direct CD versus Easy CD
writer. Any additional comments would be welcomed. Thanks

When you use direct cd it formats the cdrw so you can packet write to(make
the cd a giant floppy). When you put this cd in another computer, it has to
first be able to read cdrw(not all cd drives can), and next it either has to
have direct cd installed or the direct cd reader installed. The direct cd
reader gets put on all cd's formatted with direct cd and should popup a
message asking to install it when you put the cdrw in, but I've seen many
times where the computer just wouldn't see it and I had to goto roxio's
website and download and install the direct cd reader. Then the second
computer should be able to read the cdrw created on the first cd. So you
might just need to install the reader.
The only way to guarantee that a cd burned on one computer will work on
another is to use cd-r cd's and burn just a basic data cd. Those will always
work in any computer and any drive. CDRW using direct cd, may or may not
work, depending on the drive, computer and if the reader is installed. CDRW
burned as data cd will work if the second cd drive reads cdrw.

figure out why folders created on the CD by the Windows
ME tower can not be seen by the Windows XP laptop ....
and why floders created on the CD by the Windows XP
laptop can not be accessed by the Windows ME tower.
Thanks for the help.

What burning software are you using? And are you burning the files as a data
cd?
