Copying desktop shortcut question and copy tracing

If anyone could help me with these questions, I would be very thankful.

1) I have a video clip in a directory under the C: drive. I created a
shortcut of this file and placed it on my desktop.

If someone puts a USB into the computer, can they simply copy and paste
the desktop shortcut and copy this entire file to the USB without going
to the C: directory where the actual file is stored?

Or... will they just copy the shortcut and when they try and launch it
will the shortcut not be able to access the entire video clip because
it is on the C: drive?

Thanks! That was number 1.

2) Can you tell if a file has been copied by looking at anything under
permissons or any other tab?

If I loan out my notebook, can I tell if the person I loaned it to
copied a file?

Thank you very much for your help - I really appreciate it!

They can use the shortcut to get to the folder where the video file is and
then copy the file to whatever is plugged into the USB port. If they just
copied the shortcut, they wouldn't get the real file and the shortcut would
do no good when whatever was plugged into the USB port was moved to another
machine.

I do not see how you could tell if a file was copied. You can tell when a
file was accessed, but the file would have to actually be opened.

There is no way to tell if a file has been copied..

Copying a shortcut from the desktop of one computer to another results in
both having a shortcut to the file, except that the copied shortcut will
produce an error because the actual file does not reside on the second
computer..

Do NOT loan out your laptop if you wish to keep integrity of your machine
and the files contained therein..

Thank you very much, Mike, you answered my question. It wasn't a matter
of security so much as curiosity. I didn't know if copying the shortcut
would result in copying the entire file or if it would, as you said,
result in an error because it is in fact only a shortcut.

Thanks!
