Copying contents of one field into another

I have created a separate user-defined field titled "First
Name Short" that I want to use for a mail merge.

I want to edit some names, for example Bill instead of
William. I do not want to alter them in the
default "First Name" field because it would change
their "File As" field.

How do I copy the contents of the default "Field Name"
into my user-defined field "First Name Short" so that I
may edit this field without altering the "File As".
