It's easiest to export your contacts to a .pst file and
then import them from your laptop. Post if you need step
by step instructions on this.

Yes, do create a PST file, but don't use export to do so. Instead, create a
new PST file and copy your Contacts into it. Exporting will not permit any
control over the format of the PST file, and PST file formats are not always
compatible between versions any longer.

I would love to have step by step instructions on this.
I can save to a zip or a cd on the desktop and can read
either on the laptop. Thank you so much!

1) Create a new .PST file (use File | New) -- it will open in your Folder
List.
2) Create a Contacts folder in the new .PST file.
3) Click on your original Contacts folder. Switch it to an unfiltered table
view, such as By Category.
4) Select all items in the view (CTRL+A). Right-click the selection and
drag to the new Contacts folder you created. Select the Copy option from
the popup menu.
5) Right click the root folder of the new .PST file and click Close. It
will disappear from Outlook but will still be on your hard drive.
6) Copy the .PST onto a CD or Zip drive and then copy the file to your
laptop. Make sure to remove the read only attribute from the file.
7) Open the .PST in Outlook on your laptop using File | Open. You will now
be able to copy the contacts to your laptop's original .PST file.

If you will be updating your contact list often, you may want to look into
the various synchronization methods listed here:
