The last time I upgraded my system and had to reformat my hard-drive I lost
all my emails and address book.

I am about to upgrade again and would like to back-up my OE folders so that
I can restore them after upgrading. WindowsXP says in the help
"..........point to the folder you want to compact....... clicl
FILE......click compact. The compacted folder will have a .dbx
extension....ie Sent Items.dbx......locate this file and copy it to floppy
disk......"

Following this procedure does NOTHING. Searching for a .dbx folder achieves
nothing.

Can anyone tell me how to successfully copy and/or back-up my email folders
and address book so that I can reinstate them after upgrading.

Many thanks

Just do a search for *.dbx and *.wab files. Make sure to go to "More
Advanced Options" in the search window and check "Search hidden files and
folders". Backup the results and then on a reinstall, in OE do a file,
import, and point to the backup.

An easier way is to move the store folder to where you can find it.
In My Documents, create a new folder <My Mail>
Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder > Change to MyDocuments\My Mail

If you use a separate address book, you will need File>Export that too.

Then My Mail will automatically back up with My Documents
