I need to install a new hard drive to my laptop. I've
copied all files in My documents, and now wish to copy all
Outlook messages, and if possible, the folders I've
created in Outlook, to install to the new hard drive.

How do I do this? Thanks.

Hi,

That is very easy to do, but might take a little work on
your part. Outlook uses a single huge file to store all
its data, and you need to copy that file. It is a file
that ends with ".PST" and is usually stored at
Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ on XP, and in a different
location on prior versions of windows. Easiest way to do
it is to click "Start" then "Find" or "Search" and search
for files and folders named "Outlook.pst".

Once you copy that (huge) file to CD, you will need to
put it in a directory where Outlook knows to look for it
on the new computer. The easiest way to find out
Outlook's default directory is by using File>Open and
look at what directory it puts you in by default. You
will need to put your old .PST file in that directory to
replace the "default" Outlook.pst file created by the new
installation on the new computer. BACKUP THE OLD ONE
FIRST IN CASE YOU NEED TO UNDO THIS. You may also need
to update some settings in Outlook to get this
working....for instance, I had trouble getting it
to "see" my contacts list, but was finally able to get it
working, can't even remember how. But I assure you it is
possible to do what you want to do. Search the
knowledgebase for Outlook.pst and you might be able to
find some more info.

Good luck,

Mark
