My old computer is sick -- dying, I think. Motherboard problem. It has XP
Pro on it (and ME and W2K also), and for whatever dumb reasons, XP runs from
the H: drive.

The whole hard drive in the old machine is 40 gig, so I picked up an
external drive and instead of playing with Ghost or other backup schemes, I
just created a half dozen folders on the external drive and used xxcopy to
basically copy everything on the HD to the external drive.

Then I bought a new computer with Media Center edition on it, partitioned
the drive, and have copied everything that was on the old H: drive to the H:
partition on the new computer.

I edited boot.ini on the C: drive so that it would show the two XP installs
and allow booting into either. I can select the Media Center bootup, so I
haven't broken anything, but when I try to get to the XP Pro install on the
H: drive, I get a message that in \windows\system32\config there is some
kind of problem. Hitting any key sends me back to the boot menu.

I need to know what to do next. Any advice is welcome.

Media Centre Edition is XPpro with a few media addons (and MCE cannot join a
domain)
If you realy feel you must have xppro try a repair installation

Perform a repair install on the XP Pro. The hardware is very different
between the two machines. You may lose the dual boot setup when doing the
repair and have to set it up manually after the repair. You will also have
to be very careful that you pick the right installation during the repair.
It is very possible that you won't be able to get it to work because of the
way you transferred the system. An imaging program would have been a better
method. In any case you should use an imaging program to image the whole
system before attempting the repair. The repair may break both
installations.

Another consideration is licensing. If the old installation is an OEM
version or if you are still using the old computer then you are breaking the
terms of the license.

What OS were you using to do the xxcopy with? If it was XP, I don't think
xxcopy will use Shadow Copy, meaning it didn't get all the required files
because they were in use.
Just a though.

That depends on the country. In Germany OEM versions of Windows are not
tied to one machine and can be purchased separately, it was a decision
by the highest German court in 2000 (file reference 1 ZR 244/97).

I like it, probably MS doesnt :)

Thanks folks:

To answer all the comments:

I did use xxcopy under XP, which might well explain why I had trouble
booting into the Pro install. Hadn't thought of that, I assumed (wrongly)
that XXcopy would do some magic. Should have used the ME OS to do the
copying.

Regarding the licensing issues on XP pro. The old computer is about
defunct, not usable for anything anymore except a quiet removal of files and
settings. I'll never be using the two computers -- it's bring one down,
bring the other one up.

Regarding the XP repair install, I finally did it. It was a trial, needed
to slipstream xpsp2 into a new bootable XP install CD, fight my way through
finding some (apparently) missing file on the CD (I just copied it from the
media center windows folder -- it didn't seem important and probably
wasn't). I was able then to boot into xp pro, using the right password.
The wallpaper is gone (I'll find it), for some reason the taskbar is locked
and wants to stay locked, but the desktop was there and lots of files and
settings are obviously in place. No problems not solvable, I think. I also
found that the installation of Media Center edition from what I can see is
undamaged.

So far, so good.

Thank you to all who offered advice.
