Can anybody advise on what utility is available to copy tracks from CDs and
convert to mp3 format. I've searched and searched for a free solution but no
joy.

Many thanks,

CDEx was already mentioned by Steve, and I use it myself too. An
alternative that seems to please lots of people is Exact Audio Copy:

I only briefly tested this one, but there were three things that very
quickly turned me off:

1) Only supports two formats: The obsolete MP3 and Apples proprietary AAC.

2) Big and bulky interface.

3) It comes bundled with non-optional QuickTime! Ew!

Any chance of getting the help file in a format that works with other
operating systems? Plain text or HTML would be better than HLP.

Maybe .chm but not soon.

Isn't that still a windows-centric file format? How about .pdf?

I need to get some music from cassette to my hard drive. Am hoping
it's as simple as buying the right patch cord and capturing a .wav
file with Audacity. From there, I know what to do.

It is. You can read an html version at http://www.shareup.com/dadioh/

It isn't my page and is very old but the pertinent part (for you) hasn't
changed much.
