"Copy to" and "Move To" dialog boxes have slowed to a crawl

I have Windows XP Home Edition installed on a Toshiba Satellite notebook. It
has operated fine for the last two years, until last week. I noticed that in
one of the applications (Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006) that when I
clicked the icon to open a file, the form popped up immediatly but it took
six minutes to populate it. I thought the problem was with the software, but
have tried some other applications as well.

What I find is that when I open the File Manager, the window opens
immediatly, and populates immediatly. When I select a file in the window,
then clik on "Copy To" or "Move To" in the menu list, the dialog box pops up
but, again, takes six minutes to populate. (What I mean by that is that the
initial list appears along with an hourglass. The hourglass remains on teh
screen until a completed list pops in some six minutes later.)

I have no problem running MSOffice apps, opening files within them, or
opening files using the file manager and "Open" or "Open With" commands.

The same six-minute lag occurs when I try to "Save" or "Save As" inside the
Digital Imaging application, but not inside the Office applications. Can
anyone give me an idea where to look to start to resolve this issue??

You might need to disable the image preview for videos
Start > Run > regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
 
Thanks, Mark. I succussfully ran the regsvr32 command to unload shmedia,
but there was no change in response. Is the dialog box a dll of its own?
I'm wondering if the dialog box control dll somehow has gotten hosed... It
appears to be the same dialog box (size, location, default content) that is
used in the MS Digital Image app and the Windows Explorer "Copy To" and "Move
To" commands (with different title frames.)

Additional info... while waiting for the dialog to populate, there are no
indications that the drive is being hit (lights not on) and the processr
continues to operate betwen 2 and 3% according to the performance monitor.

Well, it's only a guess, but there is a file called comdlg32.dll that has all
the 'common controls' like that in it. I suppose that your app may have put
another version in the path and that one is fighting with windows. I would
try searching for hidden files and folders and comctl32.dll. If you hit one
outside of the system ones, like service pack, uninstall, system32, WinSxS
and dllcache, it may be a bad version.
I don't think reinstalling the system versions is going to do anything. If
nothing else shows up, I would still suspect some file or icon problem.
Another likely candidate is a hidden file named 'Thumbs.DB' in each folder.
No harm in deleting that to test.

Thanks, again for your help. I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with
Nero Scout - a media indexing softwer app that seems to think it needs to
reindex all media files on my computer every time I open a dialog box... I'll
keep the com*.dll in mind, too, in case the Nero thing doesn't resolve it.

It was a combination of suggestions (including you rreference to the
thumbs.db files) that lead me to Nero Scout - "bloatware" installed with Nero
7. I love Nero, HATE what SCout did to my machine's performance! Not sure
how it got enabled, but it happened about two weeks ago. It's been disabled
and the speed in incredible!
