Hello,

I have 2 SATA-2 disks. One is used fo backup.

When I copy about 5 GB and 12 000 files on each other, it takes about 3
minutes under XP 64 bits.

Same process can take 12 minutes under Vista 64 bits, with no AV.

I tried to update SIL drivers, but not possible.

More on that, Vista freeze sometime for 2 seconds, and everything is
locked...

PC is
ASUS P5LDW2 - Deluxe
2 GB RAM
P4 3200 Dual
NVIDIA 6600 (Driver updated)

Any idea is welcome ;>))

There have been a number of complaints over the months of how Vista handles
file copy/moving processes and that it is very slow. Took me two minutes
one time to copy a 1mb file. I doubt it is anything to do with your setup,
but more of Vista dealing with files can be slow and cumbersome.

Yes, this has been a constant throughout my use of Vista. For me, it's
even slower moving/copying files on my network. I hope they address this
issue with SP1.

I really think they ought to address the issue quicker than SP1, It might
not be a security issue but for sure its a usability issue.

Oh, I agree. I just wouldn't bet on it. :-/

Many people have complained about this..the only workaround I know of is to
use a command line for file operations.

Give them some time. They have only had 5-years to work on this complicated
task of copying files from one disk to another. I have heard that the next
version of windows will actually copy files nearly as fast as windows 95!

You are absolutely experiencing something that is problamatic with Vista.

I actually read on another forum where running virtual xp inside of vista
actually copies files 3x faster.

What a disgrace. This does need to be addressed quickly.

My work around is to shell to a cmd window and do copies through command
lines. It goes back 20 years, but it is faster than waiting for Vista to do
it.

I've heard reports that Windows Defender might have something to do with
this, but that's complete hearsay - I haven't tested it, but if it behaves
like an AV product and scans files it sounds plausible.

I've found the same thing. I wonder why this wasn't addressed during beta
testing or by the programmers themselves. They must have done these kinds
of tests and found the same thing.

You might want to check and see if the "advanced performance" options
are enabled for your hard drives.

Go to Computer--Properties-->Device Manager, expand Disk Drives,
right-click your hard drive, and select Properties. Click on the
Polices tab, and make sure that "Optimize for performance" is checked,
as well as the 2 sub-options, "enable write caching on disk" and
"enable advanced performance"
