I'm Nawez CHUTTOO, IT Administrator of A&J Maurel
Construction Ltée/COLAS and Transinvest Mauritius Ltd.
After having discussed the problem with various head of
technical dept from among my suppliers, without hope, I
could not resist to knock at your door to try to elucidate
an IT mystery for me which might be something as ABC for
you.

The problem is on the notebook of the Director of
Transinvest with the following characteristics.

HP notebook XT 6200

Pentium IV 1.6 GHZ

256 MB RAM

Windows XP , Office 2000 PRO, Project 98. MS Outlook 2000.
(POP3)

Mc Afee antivirus - Updated

Description of the problem:

When a copy is made in whatever application (word, excel,
project, or even wordpad) and when paste, the result of
the paste is a printscreen taken at the very moment when
you are pasting. For example if you are copying a cell in
excel which contain value of, say, 5000, when you paste
to another cell immediately after the copy, it paste a
screenshot just taken and not the value 5000. As if you
are doing a print screen and paste. The user has never
pressed the button print screen on his keyboard and if you
view your clipboard the screenshot is not present there at
all. The problem is intermittent. It was quite rare before
but very frequent now (everyday) and impossible to
establish a relation with any application, the time or
something else.

Measures already taken:

1. At first I check my hardware (I/O devices). The mouse
was disconnected. The problem still occured while working
with the touch pad. The keyboard was well checked also.

2. Disk Managent - Temp files deleted.

3. Check for virus after a last update. No virusses found.

4. Check for unnecessary TSR program. Especially for
screenshot utilities. (none)

5. Update to SP1a online. Note that the computer was
already patched against blastworm virus with the two last
critical updates.

The problem persisted after these 4 steps and I'm quite
puzzled for taking a next step after having found nothing
similar on the net. I have searched on the
suport.microsoft, Mc Afee, and Norton Web sites and
finally from google search engine.

Grateful if you could just tell me if this is a known
issue before I reformat and do a fresh system restore or
may be , with your expertise, you can advise me some other
workarounds which I've not yet undertaken.

Thank you very much for the attention given to this mail.
Awaiting for your response.

King regards.

Suggestion:
Try disabling the Office clipboard (enabled by default in most Office
applications). Test for results.
