I would like to make a copy of a file while other people are using it. I
have Windows 2000 Server.
When I try to copy this file now, I get this error:
Cannot copy [filename]: The process cannot access the file because another
process has locked a portion of the file.

Is there a way to copy this file while it's in use?
If it makes any difference, it is a QuickBooks company file.

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Probably not but ask the developer intuit.

I called them and got a guy in India who told me no application let you copy
and paste the file while the program was working with it, including Notepad.

Hmmm.

Actually - have you tried the good old DOS "copy" command from a Command
Prompt??

There's more than one way to skin Windows.. ;-)

Cameron:-)

Nice thought! Unfortunately, DOS gives the same error message.

You agree with India?

That's odd. I have tested Notepad on XP Pro and 2000 and have had no
trouble copying the file while it was open in Notepad. I can even delete
the file while it is open!

I wonder if we are set up differently.

Matthew

I think it depends entirely on the process between the application and the
file. Some applications work with the file entirely in RAM; initially open,
read file into memory, close, and subsequently open, write, close when you
'Save' the file.
