Copy and paste quit working in Mozilla

Hi,

As the subject mentions, copy, paste, and cut all stopped being an
option in Mozilla just after updating my Computer Associates
antivirus/malware products. Support from them has been non existant.

I do have a clone of my drive and can return to a working state sort of
easily but would rather try to fix the problem after the update has
completed rather than breaking Mozilla again in another attempt.

I can't get any action from copy and paste in Mozilla, not even trying
Ctrl-V or C. In the drop down menus all three options are grayed out. I
can highlight text and copy and paste stop being grayed out but don't
work at all. I try to paste into Notepad and nothing happens. I can copy
and paste freely in all other programs, just Mozilla is screwed up.

I know Mozill is old, but so am I, and I still like Windows 2000 better
than other OSes I've seen.

Win 2000 rollup sp4
Mozilla 5

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I know Mozill is old, ...

You should be using Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6 instead of the old Mozilla
browser. Download and install the most recent version and update it.

Hi Greg,

I appreciate your suggestion to upgrade, but I prefer to continue using
the programs I've been using for years. Some might also suggest going to
Win 7 too, but I'd think there should be a way to fix what wasn't broken
before.

If I'm against a dead end here I may look into installing something
different. I'd probably first try reinstalling the version of Mozilla I
prefer though. I have in the past tested more recent replacements and
went back to where I've been. Everythings worked so well for so long
it's hard to give up.

Thanks again!

Hmmm, odd occurrence although I've had the same thing happen TEMPORARILY
at times with various programs. Wish I had the fix for you but can only
offer the usual:

1. have you tried reinstalling the Mozilla software?
2. have you tried UNinstalling Computer Associates antivirus/malware
products?

Seems to me a reinstall of Mozilla 5 should bring back copy and paste.

Btw, one last thought; not sure if copy and paste is handled natively by
the OS or software at hand. And is copy and paste reliant on certain
registry functions or DLL's? I'm just curious whether restoring a
registry BEFORE the Computer Associates update would restore copy and
paste to Mozilla.

Lastly, if you do not have daily backups of your registry now is a good
time to start. Been using this program
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip for years, it's great ... saved
my hide MANY times!

Hi Someone,

Thanks for the interest in my "problem". I do in fact have a recent
clone of my hard drive so I can restore to the hour or so before I
installed the Computer Associates antivirus update. I'm not so sure the
problem wouldn't re-occur so I've held off going back to that time
frame. I've also become addicted to Mozillas email/newsgroup functions
that it's not just the browser I've lost copy and paste in, my Mozilla
email and newsgroups are effected by this too. If I can't find a
solution for the copy and paste failure I may just try dragging the
cloned program files from the good times over to this drive and see if
replacing them might fix things as there were.

I'm actually thinking I'm making this into more of a project than the
effort is worth. I'm a fixer by nature, not the throw away and replace
thinking that most younger folks have grown accustomed to.

I can try a reinstall of Mozilla and perhaps make things right again,
but hoped there was a setting in the Win 2000 registry or..., that would
also do the trick. I've been so comfortable with all my old programs
that it's hard to move on just because of a glitch or two. My Paint Shop
Pro ver 3.1 says I'm on day 2,194 of my 30 day trial period. I've not
keep moving on to the newest/greatest versions of programs just because
I could. My computer zips right along with these "old" softwares which
isn't always the case once you've given in to the latest that tries to
do everything for you instead of my being in control of what's happening
and when.

Thanks for your time! I think you're right though, restoring to when
things worked, reinstall the antivirus upgrade, and see if I'm in the
same ditch again is probably the best advice.

I'm going to look into your link suggestion for daily registry backups.
I try to remember to clone my hard drive every Friday night, but get
lazy for periods too. Ghost 2003, still working well too.

I understand where you're coming from Jim - you want a solution in the
terms that you asked the question not the do it a different way entirely
approach ("Doctor it hurts when I lift my arm" .... "Don't lift your arm")

I have no idea why it's happening but you said that the copy/paste
selections are greyed out. There is something that you might want to try
in this situation at:

http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/speedload/Enabler.htm

This actually makes the necessary changes in the registry to enable the
things that were greyed out and it might work for you in this case. They
do state some caveats that you should consider - mostly that if
something is greyed out there might be a good reason and re-enabling it
could involve some risk. As long as you have a backup though it's worth
the try.

I've used this very successfully myself on a couple of occasions - most
recently I was able to use an 8G CF card in an older camera that was
limited to a max 2G card. To do this, it was necessary to create a 2G
FAT32 partition on the 8G card, an option that is normally greyed out.
(I wasn't after using the full capacity of the card, just the 2G maximum
that the camera was capable of. 2G CF cards are becoming as scarce as
hens' teeth).

Hi Sid Elbow,

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried the enabler program to see if
perhaps it would give me an out, it didn't fix the copy and paste but
I'm going to play with it in the future to see what it can do.

I ended up reverting back to my week old clone to get back to a known
good starting point. As I reinstalled the Computer Associates upgrades
one by one I made two clones of my disk each time so I could again go
back when things went to hell. Turns out the firewall portion of CAs
upgrade is what is breaking things, also my scanner was breaking
function at these times. Took quite a few hours the other night to get
where I needed to be, but now I think I'll leave well enough alone for a
while. CA hasn't yet responded through their "support" channels. I doubt
I'll go with them again.

Thanks again for your help here as well as the help you've offered
others in the past. I read a few of these groups often enough to see
you're a regular here.

Ah well - worth a try. And it is a handy program (albeit potentially a
little dangerous).

Hi again,

.......And it is a handy program (albeit potentially a little dangerous).

I've kept several of the "handy" programs people here point to.

It's so nice to have copy and paste back!

Thanks again!
