I am looking for a program that will allow me to cut or copy a file to
the clipboard from the command line.

The reason I want this:
I am a big fan of the "Cathy" file indexing program, but one thing that
annoys me is that there is no way to cut or copy a file from the list of
returned files.

You can drag and drop from the list of returned files, but a. I find
that awkward, and b. you can't create a shortcut to a file that way (AFAIK).

So I'd like to add a "cut" and "copy" commands to my "Send To" menu, so
I can cut and copy files that way.

You may want to Google for Microsoft Power Toys, which will add Send To
Any Folder, and Send To Clipboard As Contents, to your Send To menu.

Apparently only the Win95 powertoys will do this, but I tried it and it
works on XP. Send To Any Folder is intriguing. This may be what I want...

thanks

Yes, they seem to work on ME and XP.
Glad I was able to help.

Do these show up in Cathy's sendto menu?

I notice some limits in what Cathy shows. Here at least, on w98. First, she
displays nothing that's in sendto subfolders. Then, this: Cathy seems only
willing to display those sendto items which have the extension ".lnk." So no
..pifs. And too then, she displays none of those Win95 powertoys sendto links
(they have weird extensions).

Does Cathy display more fully in XP? (Or chance it is to do with Cathy
having a more recent version out? I'm running v2.18.)

Small ammendment. She's also okay with *.exe and *.com (full files) that are
in sendto.

Something else occurs to me. I'd just moments before ran the install for the
w95 powertoys. I don't know if a reboot would make a difference. I'd prefer
waiting for a report, instead of shutting down and rebooting, for finding
out.

Ah, complexity! Send To Any Folder is wonderful, but Cathy doesn't think
so. But don't give up! ZDNet's Where works from SendTo within Cathy.
But where to find where?
http://themes.myqth.com/Downloads/zdwhere.zip
produces a copy which has the same SHA1 as my archived copy, so I
consider it a trustworthy download. Hope it works for you, and the OP.

Thank you for saving me a reboot. Hopefully Cathy's author might work
on that area in a future release.

I have ZDNet's Where. The one limit is that it's got one of those funky
PCMag licenses (free to use, and to download, but not to redistribute).
There are a couple of additional utilities around, copy/move dialogs
that work with sendto. Though I'd have to dig around for their names.
Or maybe others are more immediately familiar...

Something that you might (maybe) want to look into is Moon's File Targets.
http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp

You can put a link to it (targetsc.exe) in the sendto menu, to be
compatible with Cathy. It doesn't work the same as a normal copy/move
dialog. It involves presetting favored target locations. Not good if
your target locations are fluid. Mainly to do with this last (and
maybe part to do with my not rtfm'ing long enough to see if it could
be convenient instead of labor to use), I had only a short relation
with it. Still though I'd mention it, for the chance it has features
you might find of use.

thanks to everyone who responded.
Trogladite's sendto appears to be the closest to what I want, in that
you can create shortcuts AND copy AND move AND it works within Cathy.
It's a bit like squashing a mosquito with a sledgehammer, but hey, it
works and it (seems to be) free. :-)

Mentioned so far;

adding to the list (more of the kind):

While I see that the OP found this fourth entry as best suited to his
needs, I like the idea of building this list.

One that I'd tried out was "Move" by Backtec software.

It does copy, move, make shortcut, and make directory. Accepts mulitple
files. Supports UNCs.

It has a very peculiar interface. One that pretty much makes me feel like
I'm sitting, awkwardly, in a kindergarten classroom.

Same author, I do use his "Make Sub Directory" executable for my "new
folder" context command in the explorer. And for a while I used his 16k
open.exe on a fairly regular basis.

These come in the large grocery bags full of other single-purpose
executables:

(e-mail address removed) (Phred):
There does seem to be a new version specifically for XP, but I don't
know if it (they :) have the features you want of the old. See:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Oh, and they have grown up a bit -- from 205KB for the W95 OSR2 set to
several megabytes for the XP collection (TweakUI itself is 147KB) and
the rest are all over 500KB each!

I noticed MSFT doing this when I downloaded some Win2000 resource
kit tools. These were straight commandline programs I was downloading,
single executables, and average size maybe 50k. Yet each download
was about 500k.

It's because MSFT was wrapping them in that huge MSI obscenity. Besides
adding extra files to disk, the MSI installer relishes in its greed for
writing 1,200 regentries to your system, instead of the zero that would
normally take place for those tools.

Same act going on above with the XP powertoys, looks like. MSFT amusing
itself by attempting to transform something clean and small into a fatty,
belching offense.

[snip]

There does seem to be a new version specifically for XP,

2.10?

Yeah. I guess so:
<quoting>
Version 2.10 requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows Server
2003.

I had made up a small package (consisting of TweakUI, and some extras), &
upped it to Zedz.net (which, for the past week or so, apparently, has been
offline). Seeing as how Zedz is now unavailable, I'll post it (my "package")
over to a.b.f.
Don't worry; it *is* ALL Freeware :)

Look for "TweakUI_210 plus extras".
