A friend got a new XP machine for Christmas, what is the easiest way for her
to copy her photos from her 98 machine to the XP machine.

Not so easy to answer this one. It really depends on resources available. I
would say that the following options are available.
1. She has a broadband connection to the Internet via a router. She creates
a home network, connect the 98 machine and XP machine to it and then simply
"see" the 98 machine from the XP machine through the router and copy all the
files she wants. Very simple and fast but you need to know how to give
permission to the 98 machine to be read by the XP machine. Not a big
problem. If she does not have a broadband connection, a friend may have one
that can be use for this purpose.
2. She can copy the photos to CDs and then open them with the XP machine.
Simple enough but the XP machine may not be able to read CDs created on a 98
machine. If so, she will need to install a UDF reader on her XP machine,
reboot and then try to read the CD again. A free UDF reader is available
here:

3. Get and external hard drive with a USB connector, if she has a USB port
on her 98 machine. Then you simply connect this external hard drive to the
98 machine and copy the files to it. You then connect this external hard
drive to the XP machine and copy the files.

I have used "all of the above" and they all work. My preferred one is # 3. I
use an external hard drive and copy all my photos to it. This is my backup.
If something goes wrong on my hard drive, I can recover all my photos from
my external drive by simply connecting it to another computer. I used to
copy my photos to CDs so I would have a backup. But it is a lot easier and
faster to simply copy them to an external drive. When my children visit and
want some of my photos, I just give them the external drive, they connect it
to their computer and they can select what they want to copy to their
computer. So, this option really does two things: a copy of my photos on a
drive outside of my computer so I have a backup and if some photos need to
be copied to another computer it can be easily done.
