Copied files are coming up as read only

My company copied excel files from the F drive to the N drive and now all the
files are coming up as read only. Is there any way to stop this? I can
rename the file but then I then cannot delete the original file. We are
currently using 2007 but some of the old files are 2003 and it is happening
with files in both.
 
R-click on the Folder containing the files, Select Properties, and then
Clear the tick box for read-only and apply. Note this is the Folder
properties, this will affect all the files contained within said folder.
 
Thanks Bob - I did it but it won't let me save the changes - comes up access
denied - can you help me with that
 
In that case contact your IT folks and have them fix the permission
settings they overlooked.
 
I'm guessing your N: drive is a network drive.

If you don't have write access to that drive, then excel (and windows) is smart
enough to know that you can't save to that file--so it opens it in readonly
mode. Why bother asking if you don't have a choice.

I'd go back to the IT folks and tell them you want read, write, delete and
create access to that drive (or folder).

You may want to try this--just to prove it to yourself.

Open windows explorer
traverse to that drive/folder.
rightclick on an empty spot in that folder
New|text document
type some text into that document
and try saving the file.

I'm betting that you'll be stopped here, too.

I actually found the permissions tab after I last posted, called management
and explained the problem; we will work on it tomorrow - thank you both so
much for your assistance.
