I saw that Nikon now has a 4.02 version of NikonScan. I'm still using the
version that accompanied the scanner (version3.1.2). Is there any advantage
to updating to the new version in terms of speed or functionality?

Thanks,

Jean

I found V4.02 noticeably slower than 3.1.2 for the LS-4000 and Nikon
claim this is because it was optimised for the newer scanners, but claim
any difference should be minimal. I also found that it introduced a bug
that caused the software to lock up, requiring a complete reboot to
clear it, if the software was set to scan positive film and negative
film was inserted or vice versa. This is especially irritating if the
default is to thumbnail the film strip on insertion - the wrong type of
film causes a crash and there is no way to overcome it. Hence best to
switch this auto-thumbnail option off before trying it. Nikon have
confirmed this is a bug - should be fixed if/when we see another
upgrade. Apart from that, the main difference was an improved framing
capability - misaligned frames seem to be a thing of the past in my
case, although some folk still report problems.

In my case, the new version introduced a (apparently) very rare bug: a
spontaneous, unexpected quit of NS upon trying to save a scan. This
happens on my system running W2k... XP is fine with the new NikonWare.
Nikon USA tech support was stumped and forwarded the problem to Japan.
That was months ago (with no word from Tokyo), so short of wiping my
system clean and starting over, I am SOL.
