Coolscan 9000Ed post processing error

Just bought a Coolscan 9000. When I scan with the DEE component of Digital
ICE enabled, I get an error message, "An error has occurred in post
processing" just when the DDE post processing begins. I lose the scan and
have to start over. I have no problem if I disable DEE.

I am scanning 6x6 negatives at 4000dpi, 16bit, and multi-scan = 4. If I
reduce resolution to 2400dpi and multi-scan = 2, I can leave DEE enabled.

My computer has 2GB RAM and this scanning process uses about 1.4GB. I think
memory may be the problem, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone else experienced the problem of DEE post processing errors?

Have you tried re-installing the Software?
When you get errors in processing check your software.

Also be sure you have plenty of HD space in the partition where the Temp
folder is located.
6 X 6 at 4000 Dpi takes 243-486 Megabytes of Temp HD space. That's a half
Gigabyte.
Do a HD Cleanup.
In Windows Open My Computer Right Click the HD, properties. General Tab,
Disk Cleanup button.
 
Are you scanning into Picture Window Pro? Picture Window Pro used to have a
bug with the 8000ED that acted like that...

No, I am using Nikon Scan 4.0.2 standalone and saving the output as a tif
file. I thought the problem might be memory, so I increased my paging file
size to 4GB to have more virtual memory, but this didn't help.

I think I have found the answer to this problem. The manual says that when
scanning medium format with DEE is enabled to keep the file size at 169 MB
or less - either through cropping or reducing scan resolution. I find that
when I observe this limitation on file size, I don't have a problem.
Actually, I can go up to about 200 MB with no problem, 2400dpi, 16bit on
6x7.

The manual doesn't say why this file size limitation is necessary.
