Hello.

I'm very close to buy a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED, but I wonder if anyone on
the ng uses it on Linux.

I have Vuescan on a Redhat 9, so the problem would be more on the USB2
driver side than anywhere else. I will buy a USB2/Firewire card with the
scanner.

Does someone have any info ?

Thanks.

Most of the people that I've seen posting on this newsgroup use 'Doze.
Sorry, but that's the way the world works. I looked at
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#NIKON and no scanner with
5000 in its name was listed, though the LS 40 ED is said to work fine
with the coolscan2 backend.

Why do you say that? "modprobe ehci-hcd" is all you need for USB2
support as long as your kernel is >= 2.4.19. There is only one USB2
chipset in common use, and ehci-hcd supports it, so any USB2 PCI card
will work. The real problem will be getting a scanner backend that
works. coolscan2 might work, or Vuescan (Linux) might know how to
communicate with the scanner. Ask Ed Hamrick about Vuescan (Linux); he
posts here pretty frequently. HTH,

Yes, but what ? Gimp 2 is a nice product for me (even without 48bit
support - but Vuescan has ...), and Linux provides me security, trust and
really full control at low cost. But that's another subject ...

Vuescan works on Linux, and Coolscan 5000 is supported by Vuescan.
Ed answered me by mail that one pass multisampling would be supported by
VS in the next weeks. Also, VS has now the "analog gain" setting available.
Everything I need seems to be OK.

Thank you for your (quick and precise) answer. :-)))

Yes, more or less only on linux.

No problem, as already mention, ehci module supports all (almost)
controllers.

There are ATM only a few problems, but I do not know wether they only
occur on linux or also on WibBlows:
- One-pass multisampling (work in progress, as already mentioned)
- 4000dpi: on the bug list, it seems that the 4000dpi do not provide
real 4000dpi, but 2000dpi + sampled up with nearest neighbor (see
www.logic.at/people/preining/scan/)
- Wrong aspect ratio of scans if resolution is specified as Auto (bug
report I sent to Ed)

Otherwise, I have no problems at all to use the CS5000 with
libusbscanner (NOT!!! the kernel module scanner.o!!!) with kernel
versions 2.6 (and also 2.4).

If you need more information, just ask me, but I am away for 3 weeks
starting from friday afternoon.

Best wishes

Norbert

Interesting.

Did you deactivate all software sharpening of NS and VS ?
Same for IR settings: without ICE (NS) and Infrared=None (VS) ?

This would be interesting to redo the tests with a Windows version of
Vuescan.

Did you try to use NikonScan with Wine ?

Thank you.

Yes, in both cases all the Infrared settings were disabled.

See reply from WD

No, I could test VMware, but I am not sure if it will work (ie the USB
communication will work).

Best wishes

Yes, in both cases all the Infrared settings were disabled.

And how were the focusing settings with Vuescan ?

I suppose the picture comes from the center of a film.
Did you make the same test on the center and the corners ?

Hi!

No. Should I? Do you think it is a problem of `slide-flatness'?

Can you set it manually ?
If yes, could you try several tests to find if the problem is from the
autofocus side when controlled by Vuescan ?

I don't know. Maybe the tests could tell.

Thank you.

It is hard to do several tests (switching linux/windows) but I made one
with manual focus of vuescan on exactely the point which I show
enlarged. There is one more image on the website.

Concerning center/border/corner, I will try to test it today, but I am
leaving for a conference for three weeks, so maybe only after this I can
do it.

Best wishes
