SW-52F power adapter works fine with this hard drive enclosure. Very
compact, flip out AC plug, lightweight, worldwide adapter, works very
nicely. Recommended.
www.pcmicrostore.com sells the Coolmax HD-227 line of 2.5" aluminum HD
enclosures in IEEE 1394, USB 2.0 and combo USB 2.0+IEEE 1394
configurations from $24 to $39 dollars. www.newegg.com sells them at a
higher price, but includes the PS/2 to 5v power connector adapter
required if your PC can't supply enough power or if you're using USB ports.
At this price, it is a very good buy.
The IEEE 1394 drives will work off the 6-pin cable without additional
power; the USB 2.0+IEEE 1394 combo version requires an additional power
adapter when running off the USB port, such as the adapter noted above.
Any regulated 5v 1A or greater power supply would also work fine.
---
These drives install automatically under WinXP without any additional
drivers on all connection types, work great, are easy to assemble and
are recommended.
The aluminum covers are bare, so it would be advisable to spray paint
them with a clear coat paint before use in order to protect the surface
from oxidizing and turning black over time.
The case itself is easily assembled and disassembled without any tools,
using only your fingertips to press in the latches on the four corners.
The aluminum body is strong and lightwieght and results in a sleek,
compact
Also recommended is that you buy clear plastic stick-on feet from Home
Depot or other stores to stick on the four corners on the bottom of the
drive itself. 1/2" diameter round, clear feet work best. This allows
for air clearance underneath the drive itself so that heat can be drawn
away quicker, and to protect the lifespan of the HD - although the drive
itself runs cool enough to be okay by itself in most situations.
Data transfer rates over the IEEE 1394 connections were sufficient to
allow for DV capture for 2 hours without problems.
