Cooler Fan for awkward motherboard

Hi;

I've got a Soltek 75-KAV motherboard. Said motherboard has a large capacitor
right next to the CPU. The upshot of this is that when I fitted my nice new
Athlon XP2400+ cpu, I found the accompanying cooler was just too big to fit.

I've put my old fan back in there - but it was previously cooling a Duron
1200 and I doubt it was designed with my new CPU in mind! It's maximum spin
is around 4,800 revs, and it seems to keep the temperature down to a maximum
of 45 celcius. But that's with an ambient room temperature of 17C; next
summer it will go up to 30C, and I don't like the thought of what may happen
to my nice new CPU.

Anybody know of a suitable cooler that has a footprint no bigger than a
Socket A socket? The offending capacitor is about 3cms tall.

Try moving the capacitor. You can get a new capacitor with leads long enough to get it out of the way of the heat sink.

I was looking at a picture of your board, is this it?

I'm assuming the capacitor in question is on the lower left of the
socket in the pic?

It looks like the capacitor is outside the plane of either side of the
socket... if so then you should be able to use "most" heatsinks...
it'd just need be either (only) as wide, or only as long, but the
"other" dimension can be beyond the 'sink. That's how the majority
of 'sinks are shaped, except you couldn't use the larger bolt-thru
types like some Thermalrights, Alphas, or Swiftechs.

Perhaps I saw a pic unlike your board or your current 'sink is
unusual? What heatsink is this, the retail or some other?

If it's not a really expensive 'sink that you want to reuse again some
day, you might just take a grinder (or hackwsaw) to it and remove the
conflicting area on the 'sink.

Hi all;

Thanks for the advice - although I certainly won't be moving
capacitors around; I'm nowhere near that brave!!

Neither will I try taking an angle grinder to the heatsink; but both
the heatsinks suggested look as if they'll do nicely.

Kony - I couldn't get that link to work, but from what you say, I
don't doubt it's the right picture. So an "oblong" heat sink would
probably work fine. I haven't seen many of them, but I'll keep
looking.

The heat sink that was provided with the chip was huge. I don't
remember the make, and I'm on holiday all this week, but it's not
important; it was simply too big to fit around the capacitor.

Thanks again for all the help; I'll let you know how I get on.
