Converting .wmv files to DV-AVI to play on DVD player.

I recently downloaded some IT Crowd episodes. They came out differently; some
were in .avi format and some in .wmv. I burned them to a DVD, but only the
..avi
files showed up on the DVD menu. I figured I had to convert the .wmv files
to .avi.

I tried to use Windows Movie Maker. When I converted the file by saving it,
it went from in the neighborhood of 700 MB to over four gigs. This didn't
work. I tried to modify the "fit to file size" moving the initial setting
from 77 meg to 7, but when I started saving, the projected 100 minute time
was the same as the original monster file, so I figured it wasn't working.
Any ideas how to convert .wmv to .avi to burn to a DVD?

Are you saying Movie Maker would not save in
the .avi format or are you saying you thought the
file size would be too large?

Duration is the issue for DVDs...not file size.
Generally...a 4.7 GB DVD will hold 1 hour of
quality video (more if your authoring software
can compress it)

Re-read the post. I saved it to dv avi successfully, but the file size was
enormous.
I am not using authoring software. I have a good freeware dvd burner.

The other .avi files I burned are still only as large as the 700+ originals.
The .avi
files I converted from .wmv in Movie Maker grew to over four gig.

Pardon my stupidity...maybe someone
else can offer you some useful advice.

Being polite helps if you want help. John's reply was valid.

If you gave us all the info we could answer your question for you, so now
you try to tell me what answers I need to help you and I'll then answer them
for you.

Are you making data dvds?

avi is just a container, the important bit is what proceeds it, so dv.avi
works well in MM, whereas divx.avi/xvid.avi/mjpeg.avi/mpeg.avi and the
hundreds of other formulations do not. dv.avi is 13gb per hour, and is the
only avi that MM will make.
