converting to GIF - quality loss

I'm trying to convert/save a JPEG to GIF format. However, the picture
comes out somewhat color distorted. I've seen GIFs that don't have this
loss and assume that some sort of high quality software/program was
used.

Does anyone know where I can find a good FREE program that will convert
a jpeg to gif that significant loss? I've tried a couple programs that
I found but they didn't work out.

Your problem is more likely to be in the fact that gifs are limited to 256
colors.
jpgs can display millions of colors.
If the original has more than 256 colors (Like a photo) you will see a
noticeable difference.
