converting picture files

thought i was being smart backup/copying pictures from
win 98 files >cd to install in new window xp. using
picture it! pic it! can't read files- even tried install
old picture it software but NG. How do I convert old
files from win 98 to run on win xp?????

Can you copy the files to a folder on your
hard drive and then view them?
