Use Audacity or Goldwave. Do a Google search and you'll find them. Former is
free, latter there is a slight fee.

Don't forget that when you convert to .mp3 the files will end up bigger.
a 500K file will end up as 10MB

sorry nemo i dont understand,i thaught mp3 was compression utility, so how
can a 500k file bigger than an mp3 file. you say 10Mb. is that per track? ,if
it is i how can i fit 20 songs onto a 125 mb mp3 player

I don't understand either and could not see the original question. Redbook
format which is how music CDs are recorded results in larger files than MP3
files. If you convert these files to MP3 the files will be smaller.
However, as far as have heard the Microsoft format, WMA, results in a
slightly smaller file after conversion. The downside is that some older
music players do not support this newer file format.

Hope this helps

you can fit the songs on the 125mb player if you change the bit rate of the
audio encoding. the standard MP3 is at least 192kbs but if you encode to a
lower bit rate(kbs) then it will make a smaller file. you will lose some
sound quality(mostly high notes and usually frequencies outside the human
hearing range) but it will make the file smaller.
