I was wondering if there is a program for pay or free that converts various
movie files into avi or wmv. I have an 80Gb Zune player and it doesn't read
the mpegs and other files.

I am starting to use a video editing program that is older and doesn't
export to wmv.

The following freeware programs might be worth a try:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

Format Factory

(FWIW...you may want to uncheck
all the boxes on the final screen)

iWisoft Free Video Converter

(Win2000, WinXP, Vista, Win7)

Try STOIK video converter. It has a free and pro version. I believ
the free version will do what you need.

Thank you everybody. I already have the Windows Media Encoder. I thought it
could do this. But I didn't understand the help file. I will re-read it.

Check if the win media files are more washed out than the originals.
Happens to me, though with the Windows Movie Maker in XP, and with
Sony's home software, Vegas Movie Studio.

Doesn't happen with mp4 AVC, in the Sony, nor in Nero. XP as-is can't
play those, but I find that it plays in Win 7 and have heard that it
plays in Vista. It certainly must play on the Mac.
