I have created databases using Microsoft 98 but have recently upgraded my
system to 2000 but now when I try to open the database I have an error
message which says "cannot open record(s); no read permissions on 'tables' ".
Does anyone know how I can get into the databases or skirt around
permissions, or do I need to try to find an older version of access to try to
remove the permissions??

I have created databases using Microsoft 98

Ummmm...

There is an operating system Windows 98. It doesn't create databases.

There is a version of Access, Access 97. It does; it runs under Windows 98, or
any more recent version of Windows.

Which do you mean?
but have recently upgraded my
system to 2000

Windows 2000? or Access 2000? THEY ARE DIFFERENT. The operating system is the
environment in which programs run; the applications (like Access, Word,
Solitaire) are programs which run *in* that environment. It sounds like you're
confusing them!
but now when I try to open the database I have an error
message which says "cannot open record(s); no read permissions on 'tables' ".

Do you have a .MDW file associated with the database? If so you may need to
use Tools... Security... Workgroup Manager to join the workgroup. On the
Access 97 (I'm guessing) version, did you have to enter a userID and password?

Yes, I'm sorry my question was somewhat confusing. I'll try to explain it
better.

I have created databases using Access 98/97 (not sure which one) but then I
had a corrupt Microsoft Word and Excel programe so I had some guy come and
re- install Microsoft Office for me to try to 'fix' the problems with word
etc. Apparently the version of Office which was installed was newer than the
one I had previously - it was Microsoft office 2000. Since the newer version
has been installed I have been unable to get into any of my databases due to
the error message "records cannot be read; no read permissions on 'tables'"
and when I clisk on help it informs me to contact the database administrator,
but I am the administrator?!? I have no idea how to change the permissions
and I do not have the original office 98 disk to re-install it. I am
wondering whether when I had a newer version of office installed the database
thought the User/Administrator had been changed and now wont allow me to get
in.

I have paid for some IT people to come and have a look but no one seems to
know what to do to fix things. I really hope someone else has experienced
this problem before and knows of a way to get into my database.

Thank you for your adivice

Heath

I'm sure it was 97 - there never WAS any such program as Access 98.

:-{( Terrific fix HE gave you.

Search your disk for files with a .MDW extension. These are Access security
files. It sounds like your database has been secured and you are joined to the
wrong .mdw file.

If you have a .mdw file with the same name as your database, or in the same
folder, try opening Access without any database selected; use Tools...
Security... Workgroup Manager and navigate to this .mdw file and join it.

Again: when you were using the database in A97, did you have to type a
username and password to get into the database? Or did you perhaps have a
shortcut icon that you clicked to open it? If so that might give an indication
of where the MDW file is.

Yes he did a really naff job of 'fixing' things. I wasn't impressed.

The older version Access 97 needed a password to get into all the databases
I created. I set all the passwords just by going into the database, selecting
security, password etc. Its nothing fancy......I didn't need to enter a
username, it just requests my password.

The database still requests my password when I try to open it, once I've
typed my password in it then gives me the error message saying no permissons
on tables etc. In order to change the permissions, surely I would need to be
able to get into the database?

I'm not very technically minded so all of this is quite confusing, but I
will try to search for the .MDW extension thingys.

Fingers crossed it works!

Thanks! :0D
