Problem in converting excel files to dbase files as some
features are lost. There fore cannot open in Epi Info (a
stat prog)

Are you importing the XL file into (taking this for granted) Access?

Hi Mahwash Khan,

I don't know if I understood your question, but before save a sheet as dbf
you have to select the header and all register and define a name database.
Do this:
- Select A1;
- Go to Edit menu > Go to command > Press Special button > Select Current
Region option > OK
- Go to Insert menu > name submenu > Insert database > Ok
- Now save as DBF

Orlando,

What version of XL are you using? I have 2000 an do not see
- Go to Insert menu > name submenu > Insert database

Or is it an add-on.

Just curious

I belive Orlando is referring to Insert>Name>Define and naming the current
region as "database"(no quotes).

The named range "database" is used by Excel to define a list as a Database and
treats it differently than a regular named range.

Gord,

"define a list as a Database" I know about the name range, (am using it
myself) but did not know that DATABASE name range would be treated
different. Care to explain why? or point to a good source. Still curious.
Love it when new knowledge comes my way.

As J.E. points out, there is a bit of help in help.

Other documentation........?? I do remember that an Excel97 Book I had by QUE
publishing went into this in some detail.

Try this to illustrate.

Name a range "database".

Select a cell on same sheet outside the "database" range and hit Data>Form.
Data Form will come up with the "database" range.

Select another sheet and hit Data>Form. You will get an error message
"database or listrange not valid". Excel is looking for "database" and will
accept no other range.

Delete the named range "database" and select a cell outside the current region
then Data>Form. You will get an error message "no list found. select a
single cell within a list". In this case, Excel is not looking for "database"
but any range.

Select a cell within any data range and Data>Form will come up with that
range.

Very interesting Gord, I will save this off and take a look later.

Thanks,
