converting avi format to mpeg2 format

Dear sir, I recorded froma DV Camcorder to a cd through movi maker.I am using
window xp home edition.I am told xp will converr only to mpeg4 format and it
cannot be viewed in my regular dvd/cd player.How to convert into mpeg2
format.In other words how to view the cd in the regular dvd/cd player.Can
still pictures which are in jpeg form and movies in mpeg form,viewed in the
rgular dvd/cd player.I am using sony dvd player(base model)
