Converting avi files to something that can be used on powerpoint

I just purchased a Fujifilm S5000. In addition to still
images, it produces short videos in the .avi file format.
I have tried to insert a video in a powerpoint
presentation and nothing happens.
Can you tell me how I can remedy this? I suspect that I
need some sort of file converter, but I don't know any of
the details.
What should I do?

i download rad video tools, it converted my files that i
needed to insert to powerpoint.hope this helps.
