converting an avi file to a vcd

I have an avi file that is 375 megs - I want to convert it to something that
will play on my dvd player, preferably on a cd-rw disc that holds 650 megs.

Is there any program I can use which will give me an mpg file that will fit?
TMPG converts the file (xVid mpg4 - layer mpeg 3 audio) into something that
is 1500 megs. Or will I just have to burn it onto a DVD disc?

What make and model is your DVD Player?

Visit www.videohelp.com and look up your DVD player in their database.
You may find that your DVD player can play non-standard VCDs - xVCDs.

If you can play an xVCD in your DVD player then you have two options to
reduce the filesize to fit on a single CDR.

You can reduce the audio bitrate from the standard 224kb/s stereo - 128kb/s
or even lower audio bitrates may be acceptable and will reduce the final
video's filesize.

And of course you can encode the video stream with lower bitrates than the
standard 1150kb/s.

My DVD player plays xVCDs and before i bought myself a DVD writer i
converted movies to xVCD.
I used a low bitrate for the audio and encoded the video using two-pass VBR
with an average bitrate that i'd used a bitrate calculator to calculate.
Unless a movie was nearly two hours in duration, i'd be pretty confident
that i'd get it encoded to fit on a single CDR.

How many hours/minutes is your avi?
That's the key fact you omitted.
The size in MB is meaningless when you're talking about
converting it.

If you're using standard vcd template only 74 minutes
(approx) can fit on a 650MB cdrw.

Why anyone would even think of using a CDR disk to attempt to play on
a DVD player is beyond me when you consider the cheap, cheap price of
DVD discs and the fact that they are a heck of lot more compatible
than other media for playing in a hugh varity of DVD players.

Lots of folks don't have DVD burners. ("Let them eat cake!")

Many DVD players play divx.avis placed on DVDs as well. Maybe this works
with CDs too.
