I received an e-mail with an attached document that had
the '.wks' extension. When I saved the attachment and
then tried to open it, I got an error that my newly
installed Windows 2000 OS could not handle. Is there a
way to convert a "Works" document into an equivalent
Windows 2000 format so that it could be read? Help in this
matter would be appreciated. Do I have to buy software to
resolve this?

That's a Works Spreadsheet document. You will need Microsoft Works
to open it unless it's version 2.0, then Excel will open it. The
operating
system has nothing to do with this.

You'll need Microsoft Excel -- which is not part of the Windows 2000
software, it's part of the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

When I receive a Works file, I simply open it in Word
using the Retrieve Text choice. Choose Retrieve Text as
you would when opening a WP document, Excel Document,
etc. Just choose the Retrieve Text and it will strip all
the gook from the file, then re-save it as a Word
Document. You'll lose some formatting, but it's the
document information you want, right?
