When I converted a presentation from 2007 to 2003, text converts to pictures
that can't be edited. How can this be fixed?

How did you convert? What kind of text was it? For example, was it
regular text in a placeholder. Regular text in a text box. Text in some
other shape. WordArt. SmartArt....

If you save a document as a 97-2003 document using Save As, this
normally won't happen.

It was regular bulleted text in a place holder. I did a save as 97/2003 and
saved it with the .ppt extension.

That's not supposed to happen. Have you tried saving it normally and
opening it in 2003 with the compatibility pack installed? 2003 can read
..pptx files.

I'm wondering if it's just this particular file. I've not had this issue
with other presentations. This presentation is being opened by another
person, so I will suggest they download the compatibility pack and see if
that helps.

If you are using effects or any features on an object in 2007 that are not in
2003, that object will look like a picture when opened in earlier versions.
The file will be editable when opened again in 2007.

It's not an object. I'm using a slide layout for title and contents and just
typing in text.

No object, just the layout with text. I've since learned that if you use a
"new" color of text in 2007, when you convert it to 2003 it will save it as a
picture. Has anyone else experienced this?

It depends on what you've added to the text. New 2007 features --
reflections, glows, some shadows (but not all), bevels, etc., will render
the text as a picture when the file is saved as 97-2003 format.

You can run the compatibility checker to see what will happen when you
down-save. Go to Office Button | Prepare | Run Compatibility Checker.

Again, when I said 'Object' I meant any item in the presentation.

I don't know what you mean by a "new" color of text, but if you are using a
feature that is not available in 2003 on your text, or your text box, then it
will not be editable in 2003. It doesn't convert it to a picture permenantly,
it is just not editable in 2003. The same file will be editable in 2007.

Check your slide master and slide layout. I suspect you've got a new feature
on the text and don't even realize it.

Just changing color shouldn't cause this problem. Then again, it depends on
what you mean by using a "new color." If you select something from the
WordArt Styles gallery on thye Drawing Shapes Format tab, then yeah, you'll
get a picture when you save as 97-2003 format. Or if you add an outline to
the text, for example, it will also save as an image when you down-save.

So I guess the question is, what *exactly* are you doing? Step-by-step....

Thanks! I ran compatiblity checker and got this message: "The shape and any
text in it cannot be edited when using earlier versions of PowerPoint."

Tried changing the font and I don't have any features on the text, but still
it won't convert. The font is now Calibri with no special effects.

After further investigating, I did have the text outlined. I took off the
effect and it works fine. Thanks for all your help! I'll remember this the
next time I create a presentation.
