Hi there,
First you should realize that a laptop is not really meant to be used for
video capture. Some make it able to capture video by disabling those
features that a laptop has...these are all to do with the preservation of
battery power and the reduction of the core voltage of the CPU so as to
make the machine run slower. If you get problems you will need to
investigate the above by visiting the manufactures web site and also the
Microsoft web site. These features can be disabled but as the CPU will then
run at its full voltage all of the time, your CPU may start to run hot.
To capture VCR based Video you will need an analog capture device. To
create a DVD you will need DVD authoring software and of course a DVD
Writer. It is common that DVD authoring software comes with the DVD writer.
If your laptop does not have a DVD-Writer you would have to run an external
Writer via either a SCSI or FireWire interface. These interfaces for
laptops can be quite expensive in comparison to the "normal" devices for a
desktop machine.
Before you purchase any of the above, you should confirm that your machine
can support these devices. One person recently purchased a DV Camera in the
belief that it was capable of DV-IN and DV-OUT. She had checked this on a
3rd party web site and not with the manufacturer, what she ended up with
was a camera that only had DV-OUT !!!
