Convert Turntable Records to MP3?

I want to convert some of my old choice LPs to MP3's, and thence to
CD/DVD disk.

I have a working turntable with what looks to be RCA output. I have
removed it from my Home Theater setup, and, so, I now do not have a
receiver or amp for the turntable.

It appears that I cannot simply connect this turntable directly to my
computer's sound inputs. That comports with what I read, but I have
also read that I should be able to connect to the computer's mic
audio connection. Alas, that does not work for me, but then, the RCA
connector does not match up with the computer's audio connection
anyway.

Has anyone actually done what I want to do? Is there an adapter that
will enable the RCA's to connect to the computer's audio? Will some
sort of a cheap pre-amp do the job? Or do I have to either use a
receiver or amplifier?

I should add that logistically, I cannot connect my home theater
receiver to my computer.

Why not just re-connect the turntable to your amp and use the amp output as
your line-in on the PC?

Alternatively, you can buy USB turntables!
