I want to changeover from XP Home to XP Pro. After I buy
the software, what do I do?
Is there an unistall process? Or does it just upgrade?
I do not want a duplicate system? I have to be able to
network with a large network.
Can anyone help? I am trying to accomplish this before
school resumes and I return to work.
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping.

In the package you buy XP pro, there will be some short documentation
about the procedures you should follow. Follow them. This will involve
booting off the CD, and during this process you will be asked to make
some choices. The questions are simple and you'll know how to answer
them to avoid getting a duplicate system and without reformatting your
hard disk.

Just make sure to take backups of important date, none-the-less. Prudent.

The upgrade from XP Home to Pro is simple. As with any upgrade you should
backup important data first. That is always a prudent thing to do. Do a
decent cleanup by right clicking your C drive icon and select
Properties->Disk Cleanup button. You can also dump your System Restore
points as they won't survive the upgrade anyway. To do so go to Control
Panel->System Properties->System Restore Tab and Turn off System Restore,
click Apply and then re-enable it again. Next run defrag. After the cleanup
you can simply disable your antivirus, pop the XP Pro CD into the drive and
select Install->Upgrade[recommended]

The upgrade will take about 45 - 60 minutes. When finished do not activate
immediately. You have a grace period so skip activation as you can activate
later. Due to the proliferation of worms like Blaster and Welchia it is
important not to go on line until after you have enabled XP's Firewall. Go
to Control Panel->Network connections->right click your network connection
and select Properties->Advanced Tab and protect your system. Because SP1a
and Critical Updates do not survive the upgrade you should visit the Windows
Update site and install SP1a and Critical Updates to re-patch your system.

Generally an upgrade goes very smoothly.

Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There is no special
upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP Professional
Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box).

No uninstall is necessary. You can choose to upgrade over the top
of XP Home.

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.
