Convert midi to mp3 or wav audio?

Would anyone know how to convert midi (.mid) files to wav or mp3 audio files?

There's all kinds of neat midi files for free download, it would be cool to listen to them
in the car!

I suppose there are $$ applications to do this but I'm hoping for a freeware download that
does a good job.

I downloaded FlexiMusic Wave Editor, an shareware with free trial version
for recording and editing Mp3 files. This software can't directly edit midi
files, so has to record the midi files in this software, then convert and
save it as Mp3 or wav.
