Is there a way to convert from a digital camera AVI file (88kbps) to a
higher bitrate (160kbps) without losing quality? I'm using winAVI to
convert but the quality loss is obvious.
Thanks

Have you tried this:when convert video files to avi,you can select
encoders,
video:xvid mpeg-4 codec;audio:mpeg layer-3
you can find them in the advanced option.

You cannot make information that isn't there. So by upping the bitrate you
often do not get any improvement and if you are lucky then you don't lose
too much.
It also depends on what sort of avi you have to start with, as avi is just a
wrapper and can contain many file types. DV-avi is the best quality, but I
suspect the frame size of this would be larger than your digi cam, so would
again result in a lower quality end result.
It's just aquestion of trying all the converters you can find and seeing
which one gives you an accpetable result.

My purpose in upping the bitrate is for compatibility, not to improve
the video. I have tried several converters but not all. I will try
some others.

I'm not sure how upping the bitrate will make it more compatible, but you
don't say what sort of avi file it is and what problems you are having with
it.
A higher bitrate file is generlaly harder to play as it needs more
resources.

Ok. What I'm trying to do is make my AVI files compatible with a DVD
player that supports AVI. I noticed that all the AVI files my DVD
does support are 128kbps or higher and it is 88 straight out of the
camera. I don't know what codec it is. I will try to learn more
about it tonight.
