Hello newsgroup,

Does anyone know how to convert all the bitmap images in a
word document to jpeg? I just realized that my doc size
is getting out of control (11MB and growing), and I'm
hoping to avoid manually converting all the images and re-
importing them.

Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is a way to automatically convert .bmp to .jpg in
Word. Besides, converting from .bmp to .jpg could result in visibly
reduced image quality when you print.

Word 97 and newer versions automatically compress any uncompressed
graphics upon save. As a test, I took a 2,102KB .bmp and converted it
using Microsoft Photo Editor to a 173KB .jpg (YMMV depending on the
graphic). The .bmp resulted in a 659KB Word file, and the .jpg resulted
in a 206KB Word file (again YMMV). You'll have to decide if it's really
worth doing... does it really matter if the file is 11MB or 4MB?

Do you have "track changes" enabled? Do you have "versions" enabled?
One or both of these often cause file sizes to become bloated.

Hi Kat,

Unless you need to send the file off to someone else, you might be better
off inserting the pictures as links, instead of pasting them into the file.
That way, Word need only keep a pointer to where the image file is located.

Cheers
