Hi All,

We are about to convert from W98 clients on NT4 to Vista on Wk3, can anyone
advise me of any TIPs that may be available on how to make the conversion
easier.

Regards.

I would forget about conversion. You need a clean install. Preferably on a
brand new hardware. I seriously doubt that a Win98 box is still capable of
running Vista. You need to set up a project.

Get support from your management and staff
Assemble the team
Asses hardware capabilities.
Assess present apps and their abilities to work in Vista.
Assess quantity of data that needs to be transferred.
Choose technologies from which your business will benefit most.
Plan shopping for hw and sw.
Train the staff
Train end users
Plan actual migration.

Hi Peter,

There is a team already assembled and the current system is NT4 with Windows
98 clients. We are installing a brand new infrastructure with new HW and SW
and i was wondering if anyone had any tips regarding this type of
installation.

Regards.

Which is still confusing because AFAIR NT4 was the desktop operating system
prior to Windows 2000.....

Peter

NT4 having stations with W98 is not able to go to Vista without a clean install of every station including NT4 and then again having those systems tells me that it will probably not work because of Hardware restriction which will not be compatible with Vista. Those are old systems which is probably not compatible with the Vista OS

If you are planning to use W2K3 Server Enterprise then you can have stations with Vista providing the systems are up to par with all hardware specifications that is required when installing Vista or W2K3..Your best bet is W2K8 Enterprise and Vista of any flavor

Everyone is focusing on that fact that your old hardware won't support the
new operating systems, but I read your information to say that you are
replacing *everything* and you just want a guide for deployment.

Go to TechNet and look for the deployment links. Also go to the server's
homepage and look for deployment/migration links. There is a wealth of
information on Microsoft to help you but you will need to do some reading.

It would also be wise for you grab a couple workstations and install Vista
and Server Win2k3 on each to practice.
