Controlling USB2 port power?

Does anyone know of an application that controls power to individual
USB2 ports? (It's part of the USB2 specification, but not widely
implemented)

Possible glitches:

1. My device doesn't use USB, just the power, so isn't a known device
2. My USB2 hardware may not support the power specification.

Why? So I can turn off my USB LED Christmas tree before going to bed. :-)

How about unplugging the USB cable?

It will wear out the plug and socket. Anyway, it's plugged in round the
back of my PC and I'm:

1. To lazy to go there
2. Allergic to the dust round there
3. Afraid of the spider that lives nearby
4. Geeky enough to want to do it with my mouse, or even better, voice
recognition: "Tree, Off!"

Of course, another alternative would be a "proper" USB Christmas tree,
with drivers to control what it does. Like the mini aquarium that I have
plugged into the adjacent socket. What uses have other folks found for
these USB sockets? :-)

Connect my printer, my scanner, download pictures from digital camera,
plug in external hard drive, plug in thumb drive, connect two
computers, connect to GPS device.

Re: USB Port Power

there are utilities for USB removal (turning port power off)

what you need is to 'Remove' the drive, not 'Eject' it

There are two modes of USB drive removal

'Ejecting does not turn off power

'Removing' does

downside: you have to physically unplug and plug back in to power up after 'Removing'
but microsofts devcon.exe utility allows turning on and off usb ports but you have to know what you are doing with the command line parameters... or you can turn off devices you really dont want turned off.

This website has usb utilities and info on usb removal

look for 'RemoveDrive.exe'
