controlling formats in imported spreadsheets

I am importing an excel spreadsheet (ver.2000) into Access (ver. 2000) and
get a variety of errors.

First, I have issues controlling the format of the data that comes into
Access with numerous errors being reported (text as !NUM, numbers as #ERR)
etc.) I have reviewed the registry settings and although I am not sure that I
fully understand them, I have tried tinkering without any change in result.

Second, I periodically get an erro "subscript out of range" when I do the
import. I believe it has something to do with the number of rows but by
redefining the range in Excel, I eliminate the issue - it is just a pain and
wonder if anyone has any info.

Third, when I try the transferspreadsheet function to try and eliminate some
of my problems, I get an error "external table not in expected format." Gort
no clue on this one.

Help!

I make the first data a false record in my Excel so that Access will not try
to change zip codes or telephone digits to numbers. In the false record put
some text and it will not try to change to number.
