I am trying to place single and double arrow lines between boxes in a
powepoint 2007 presentation, but they seem to have a mind of their own when
it comes to layout. Is there any way to make an arrow point down, sideways
etc. and control routing so that the elbows do what I want instead of what
they want?

Well, it kind of depends on what you're trying to do, but generally
speaking, once you put the ends where you want them, you should be able to
drag the yellow diamond around to tweak the connector line.

I find the biggest problem is that the connectors re-shape themselves if I
move the endpoint.

So what you might want to do instead is draw a freeform [Home (or Insert) |
Shapes | Freeform (in the Lines section) ]. Click once to begin the form,
move your mouse to where you want the arrow to bend and click again, move to
the endpoint and click twice to complete the form.

To tweak it, you can select it and go to Drawing Tools Format | (Insert
Shapes chunk) | Edit Shape | Edit Points. Or you can just right-click the
form and choose Edit Points. :-) Then you can drag the lines/corners around
as you wish.

One thing, though -- even though I've turned off the "snap to grid" and
"snap to object" off, I'm still having trouble with the points snapping to
some unknown position when I try to move them in smallish increments. This
might be good in some cases, but it's sure not good for me right now.
